Music – that 5 letter word that no matter how many times mentioned, it never loses its impact. From the time we were born, music has been a part of our lives, inspiring most of our actions and motivating us when we feel empty and despondent. Right from the cradle, our parents used it to appease us when we felt disgruntled and as we grew up, we seamlessly learned of its ability to rid our minds and souls of subjective feelings. Music has played refuge to all of us at one point in time or another. In a nutshell, music is known to bring out the best in us. Now, let us move a little further from these common facts and dig deeper into this timeless art.
There are many genres of music. Some of these have existed for a pretty long time while others are the mere evolution and variants of the original ones. Some of the main genres of music include Reggae, Hip-hop, Soul, Jazz and Blues. The first three kinds were popularized by minority African Americans based in the New Orleans state of the US. These genres were inspired by the struggles undergone by these groups as is evidenced in their lyrics. However, they have taken the world by storm, with reggae finding its new roots in Jamaica and hip-hop being celebrated all over the world.
Aside from the 4 genres above, there are also others that are not so popular and are often identified with a certain group in the society. These include Rock music, Techno music, Rhythm and Blues, Reggae etc. Still, there are more subcategories of music and even at the point of composing this article, there could be a new form of music being born somewhere in the world.
While we listen and savor the cool beats from our favorite pieces, what we often miss is the fact that a lot of hard work goes into producing an excellent music piece. There are 4 major stakeholders involved in ensuring a great piece of music is written and produced.
Just to scratch the surface, there is the lyricist. This is the individual who comes up with the words to sing. Initially, these were the owners of the music but as times changed and more specialization was introduced into the industry, anyone can be a professional lyricist nowadays.
Another group of stakeholders are the singers or the band. These are the people who now translate the lyrics into the beautiful vocals and it could be a single person known as a soloist, two people referred to as a duet or even a multitude, in which case they would be referred to as a choir or band depending on the level of music composition involved.
The other category is the instrumentalists and these form the bedrock of music production nowadays. There is a lot of specialization here and that depends on the kind of instrument one excels at playing.
Lastly, we have the music producers who are charged with the enormous task of fusing the vocals and instrumentals into a coherent piece for the final audience.
Music and Ambience
There is nothing that sets the mood of a place or an occasion than music. Music has been used to create a somber mood in cases where people are aggrieved as well as create a celebration mood where there is cause for one.
Regardless of where a party or occasion is held, the impact of music will always remain. This means that whether you choose to, say, hold your wedding in a church, public gathering, or even in your backyard, the effect created by music is still the same. Once the party is begun, leave the rest to music.
